Round 7 saw us take on Sturt at Unley Oval. This match was identified as one where we could be really competitive, with Sturt being one of the only other teams not in their third season.
We started the game slowly with Sturt managing to get a few good forward 50 entries. The Eagles responded well and fought back, gaining control of the game and swinging the momentum our way. On the back of some hard work from Tesharna Maher we were able to get the ball deep inside our forward 50 and finish off with the first goal of the match. Co-Capatin Natasha Farrier booted one and and U18 State Squad member Chloe Forby managed her first goal in senior footy.
Sturt came back hard in the second quarter but we managed to keep them at bay. Georgia Bevan (Sturt) got herself involved in the game, driving the ball forward. Colbie Frankland had a very solid quarter down back, winning several one on one contests. Sturt were able to get two goals on the board but we went into the break ahead.
In the third quarter we managed to gain control again and created several good scoring opportunities. Unfortunately we were unable to convert our opportunities and Sturt were able to close the gap further. Once back in the game, Sturt had a very strong last quarter and ran over us, booting five goals and taking the four points. Unfortunately we had our best and weakest quarters for the year in the same game.
A mention to Gigi Dadds and Tessa Grant who were both strong in their first SANFLW matches.
Our focus for the remaining games will be to work on putting four quarters of strong, consistent football together.
This week we take on North at Maughan Thiem KIA Oval at 3:45pm.
