The WWTFC SANFLW League side started its 2022 campaign against Sturt Saturday at Hisense Stadium. As with all round 1 clashes, it was a bit of the unknown for both sides including 8 debutants for the Eagles.
We started the match well, controlling the tempo for the majority of the quarter and missed a few opportunities to put some scoreboard pressure on Sturt. There was a slight breeze favouring our end Q1 and we lead the first break by 2 points.
Sturt came out full of run Q2 and kicked 4 majors which left us reeling to get any momentum going our way and the numbers showed we lost the contested ball convincingly.
At half time we reset and got ourselves back in some sort of control and held Sturt to 1-4 for the remainder of the match.
The group showed incredible resilience to stay in the game and continued to battle out the game to the end. We will head back to the training track with plenty of positives & some areas to review and reset.
There were contributors all over the ground with Goody standing out with her ability to mop up in the back half and help our back 5. New recruits Kaslar and Hickey battled well all day with Zuill and Little showing some class and skills around the footy.
We now have a short week to prepare for West Adelaide at their home ground of Hisense this Friday night which should be another challenge for this group to continue to grow and work towards the consistency required to have success.
