Jamie Tape – 20 Years

January 3rd 2023, marks 20 years since the passing of Jamie Tape.

Jamie was an Eagles junior, making his League debut in 1992, and going on to play 43 games by the end of 1993, whilst also being an integral part of the Club’s Premiership success in both the 1993 Foundation Cup victory over Port Adelaide and the SANFL League flag over Norwood in the same year.

Goals were rare for the dashing defender, kicking just 2 in this period, but one of them was that memorable snag in the 1993 Grand Final, his only goal for the year, and the celebration to match.

Jamie was drafted to Richmond in 1994, winning the Club’s best 1st year player award in his debut AFL season, as well as earning an AFL Rising Star nomination.

1994 also saw Jamie selected in the South Australian State Of Origin team that defeated Victoria.

Going on to play 75 games for the Tigers, he switched to Collingwood in 1998, playing a further 16 games in 2 seasons, for a total of 91 AFL games and 5 goals.

The Eagles welcomed Jamie back to the Club in 2000, playing another 46 games (1 goal) in the following two seasons, and featuring in a further 2 SANFL Grand Finals as well as representing SA in the State Team each year. By the end of 2001, he notched up a total of 89 SANFL games and 3 goals.

Jamie was just 28 years young when he passed away in 2003, but has never been forgotten, and never will be. The Woodville West Torrens Football Club has since introduced a Club Award in his honour, the Jamie Tape Medal, presented to a player each year for Sacrificial Acts throughout a season… and has become an incredibly prestigious award to receive.
