Round 2 against West Adelaide at City Mazda Stadium saw the Eagles play a much better brand of football. The inclusion of youngsters Tesharna Maher and Teagan Usher gave the team an injection of pace and provided us with cleaner hands around the contest and out of defence.
In the first quarter we had plenty of the ball, driving it forward for several inside 50’s but we were only able to add 3 points to the scoreboard. West were scoreless for the first term.
The second and third quarters saw an arm wrestle with neither team able to control the match. Sarah Perkins and Kiana Lee managed a major each but West were able to capitalise on their opportunities more often, with Chelsea Biddell booting 6 goals before the three-quarter time break.
The last quarter proved to be a breakthrough quarter for our side with the engine room finally kicking in to gear. Jaimi Tabb was instrumental to this, kicking two majors in the final term. Tara McDermott and Rachel Dunstan got themselves involved up forward late and Steph Walker also stepped up in the last, rolling through the midfield and winning two crucial clearances. We got within 3 points with a minute to go but ultimately fell short at the final siren.
There was some exciting football played during the last quarter which was great to see, moving forward the women will be looking to capitalise earlier on our opportunities.
We look forward to taking on fellow first year SANFLW team Centrals this Friday night, 6pm at Coopers Stadium.
