SANFL is pleased to announce that South Australian football’s night of nights – the 2021 Magarey Medal count – will return to being held as a black-tie event at Adelaide Oval later this month.
The dinner, to be attended by more than 350 players and guests, will be broadcast live on 7mate from the William Magarey Room on Monday, September 27.
SANFL last year made the decision to hold the vote count for the League’s most coveted award – won in 2020 by North Adelaide’s Campbell Combe – as a ‘virtual’ production for television due to the coronavirus pandemic.
SANFL CEO Darren Chandler said the League was thrilled to be able to return to the tradition of staging an event in the week of the SANFL Statewide Super League Grand Final in recognition of the League’s fairest and most brilliant player in 2021, as well other major award winners.
“The Magarey Medal is a significant part of the proud and rich history of the SANFL State League, with much anticipation and excitement surrounding who will be crowned SANFL’s best and fairest player of the season,” Mr Chandler said.
“Following one of the most challenging periods in the League’s 143-year history, we are very pleased to be able to come together to celebrate a terrific 2021 season with the 10 participating clubs and our generous corporate partners.”
2021 will mark the 117th year of the Magarey Medal which has been presented every year of the SANFL competition since 1898, with the exception of 1900 and 1904, and the World War I and II years.
Also presented on the night will be the winners of the Reserves Magarey Medal, the U18 McCallum-Tomkins Medal and R.O Shearman Medal.
In addition, the 2021 Powerade Breakthrough Player of the Year and the U18 Torrens University Cup Most Valuable Player will be announced.
The 2021 Ken Farmer Medallist, Glenelg’s Liam McBean, will be recognised as the Statewide Super League’s highest scoring goalkicker for the third consecutive year, having shared the award in 2020 with former Woodville West Torrens player James Rowe.
SANFL is also pleased to welcome Harvey Norman and LG Electronics as official prize partner for the Magarey Medal event.
The 2021 Magarey Medal, to be hosted by Channel 7’s Mark Soderstrom, will be broadcast live on 7mate in SA and live streamed nationally on 7plus from 8:30pm.
