Another Lonergan flies with the Eagles

Woodville-West Torrens has bolstered its midfield with the signature of delisted Gold Coast Suns on-baller Jesse Lonergan.

Coming off the back of Power defender Jimmy Toumpas confirming his Oval Avenue return last week, Lonergan is set to play under the guidance of his uncle Sam Lonergan, the new Eagles coach.

Speaking on SANFL Radio, the 24-year-old described himself as a hard-working inside midfielder, using his strong frame to advantage at the stoppages.

Measuring in at 184cm and 91kg, Lonergan admits he knows little about the SANFL Statewide Super League but is being schooled quickly by his coach, who played with Glenelg in 2014 and 2015.

Featuring in 60 AFL games after being selected at Pick No.13 in the 2012 AFL National Draft, Lonergan threw himself into training on the same day he landed in Adelaide for the first time.

The Tasmanian joined in with the Eagles’ 2km time trial around the Uni Loop on Wednesday night, meeting several team-mates while also reuniting with Toumpas.

Lonergan, who was selected in the same AFL Draft as Toumpas, knew the former Melbourne utility from their time together in the AFL Academy.

Ex-Richmond forward Ben Nason, 28, has also crossed over to play for the Eagles in 2019, having previously played for Central District and Glenelg.

Nason, who measures in at 179cm and 80kg, knows the new Eagles mentor well as he played with Sam Lonergan at the Bays before moving back to the Bulldogs.
