Round 6 was against Norwood who have been going nicely at top position all season. It was an exciting week given the challenge to play against a quality team on Adelaide Oval. I was really happy throughout the week with our preparation and our training which was solid. Unfortunately, this did not translate in to the start we wanted and gave Norwood too much momentum and freedom throughout the first quarter, seeing us manage only one in side 50. This eventually had us trailing by 10 points at quarter time.
The rest of the game the players worked hard and played some footy that met our expectations, gaining momentum. This saw us down at the third quarter break by only 3 points, keeping Norwood to only 1 point for the quarter. Nicole Collie playing at full back was superb in defence, stopping numerous attacks to the Redlegs goals through the game, particularly in the third quarter. I’m really pleased with our younger players coming through. Once again Marlie Fiegert showed that she will develop into a quality player for the future.
The back line gave everything in what was difficult conditions, with the temperature being over 30 degrees. Kiana Lee, Jaida Tabb, Jovanca Zecevic all kicked goals and Jessica Sedunary was always dangerous around the forward 50.
We are continuing to try new things and moving players around to get the right structure going into the back half of the season. We like what Jamie Parish showed on Adelaide Oval at centre half forward as she continues to present and lead strongly. As the coach I’m really pleased on how our players fight and are so spirited, they were really brave to the end but our slow start was the difference on the score board, and it is something we need to work on for the next game against the Panthers to make sure we keep in touch for the finals race.
