The first semi-final versus Central Districts at Richmond oval was going to be a contest where we needed to be strong and capitalise on opportunities as soon as they presented themselves.
Central Districts jumped out of the gates quick, scoring two goals within the first 5 minutes. But to our team’s credit they were able to control this and even the contest around clearances, and finish the first quarter five points down.
Second quarter saw the team really control the football and capitalise on every opportunity, scoring seven shots to their one and taking a six point lead into half time.
Coming out after the break we were in a similar position to the weekend prior’s game; knowing we needed to stick to the basics which we were able to do and as a result our lead increased to 12 points at the end of three quarter time.
To win the game we needed to continue to drive forward. The first 10 minutes of the last quarter saw the ball inside our forward-50 frequently but we were unable to capitalise, kicking seven straight points. Central Districts was able to kick the last two goals of the game, but in those final five minutes our team showed composure and took control of the ball, and ultimately the game.
We’ve now earned the right to play in the prelim final against Sturt which we are excited about. We have a really clear mindset on what we need to apply to ensure we come away with the win.
